Paper Cut

During the process of writing, marking up, and getting help on this research paper, I have learned that I do many things well but have a very hard time doing other certain things. I really think that starting and ending my essay was the easiest because opening and closing or intro and conclusion is always a very easy thing to do but the one thing I do have a problem with is when I have to cite my sources  I was not sure how to tie everything into and within that. The findings was another thing that I had a rough time with and I was not understand really having to tie it into my essay. I got help from other friends because of it and was making sure that all of our thoughts went together into making this essay as good as it could get.

The Problem Of Racism Around The World

Can you image how much welcoming, sweet, and happier this world would be without racism? Well, through my years of being on this earth, I have had the awful pleasure of being able to witness, hear, and deal with this world racism problems. I have come across many different facts about racism including, “ African- Americans comprise 13 percent of the U.S. population and the 14 percent of the monthly drug users, but 37 percent of the people that are arrested for drug related offenses in America.” There may be certain races that may be most known for a certain thing including crimes, theft, and those certain things but everyone is human, everyone is the same therefore no one in this world deserves to be mistreated because of the color of their skin or because of the way they look. It is absolutely wrong and awful. The other facts that opened my eyes are, “In a 2009 report, two-thirds of the criminal receiving life sentences were non-whites. In New York, it is 83 percent.” When I read this I think to myself, I wonder why African Americans are the way they are and why they are committing so many crimes and using drugs so often. Then a thought comes to my mind and it is that they have nothing else to do with their lives. They make these bad decisions because this world only thinks they are capable of those decisions so they don't offer any better than they think they deserve. I can tell a story that is from my own past and what actually happened in front of my one time. My three girlfriends and I went on a trip to San Francisco and there are so many different things to see and do there. So we decided we would get ready in our hotel room and dress up nice to go have a dinner down at the Union Square because we had gone during Christmas time and it was so beautiful, the tree was lit and there were so many amazing things to look for and see. So we decided we wanted to go to The Cheesecake Factory. So we are on our way to The Cheesecake Factory and as we are passing right by the tree and right by the ice skating rink; I look down to my right corner and I see a homeless black man who was sitting right below this tree. There were so many people walking by and looking and he was holding up a sign. So I decided to walk by and look at the sign as I was walking and the sign read, “I know I am black but I am willing to work for anything.” As I saw that I looked to my friends and I said did you see that and they both answered no and so I stopped and had them read it. They could not believe their own eyes and were so shocked. I; to this day, cannot believe that some man would ever have to think or describe himself in that way. Everyone is human and everyone should be treated the same. The fact that no one can walk this world with just a normal and happy life without having to be sat there and stared at by others who have different colored skin than they do, or who don't look the same as they do. This is not just in racism. This goes for anything as far as hairdo’s to the way your makeup is done to any type of disorder. It just amazes me that our world can be so cruel and judgmental. Nobody in this world is perfect. I don’t care what anyone says or who tries to avoid that statement but NO ONE is perfect therefore everyone has their flaws, everyone doesn’t do everything right and the fact that someone thinks that they can point out other peoples flaws and troubles is not right in anyway. Another big thing for me is that when I walk around school I see others hanging out in many different groups. Some of the groups we call jocks, partiers, nerds, asians, athletes and there are so many more. I feel that everyone likes their own things and no one should be judged just maybe because you don’t hang out with the nerds doesn’t mean that you never can. Someone may get into a fight in their group, say one of the jocks get into a fight with another jock and so one of them is kicked out of the “group” and then the jock wants to go into the other group of maybe athletes. The athletes need to be welcoming and sometimes you do find that and sometimes you don’t. It really just depends on what you like and what you want. Everyone should learn how to welcome others into other groups. Not everyone may want to hang out with all the same people and therefore meeting new people and hanging out with others is always a good thing.

In a lot of places you always see other races trying to act like someone or something they are which most of the time means another race. There are a lot of white people out there at my school that are always trying to act like Hispanics. They end up starting to hang out with them and do the things that the Hispanics do and then you start to see them dressing like the hispanics and then they start talking like them. It is all just a matter of who you are, who you want to be and who you are striving to be. I found a certain fact and it says, “A survey in 2011 revealed that 52 percent of non-Hispanic whites expressed anti-Hispanic attitudes.” There are always those type of people out there so in that case I feel that everyone needs to be the person they really are and not try to be someone they really aren’t because in the long run; if you are trying to make someone happy with someone you really aren’t and are acting to be someone then eventually they will realize that because you wont have any other ways to impress them or try to satisfy their every need and that is really not how the world is supposed to work. Everyone was made to be someone specifically and if God wanted you to be the way you are either wanting or trying to be then he would’ve made you that way. There is always a reason for everything and I don’t think people realize that. A lot of people have a hard time realizing stuff like that and they are always thinking that they need to be better and that they need to act like someone they are not and it is not good at all.

I have also began to notice that there are a lot of different black and whites in the federal and state prisons that go in for the same drug offense or murder sentence or something along that line but then the blacks end up getting and having to serve more time that the whites. I found a fact to relate to my point and to show that that is in some cases true, “In 2010, the U.S. Sentencing Commission reported that blacks receive 10 percent longer sentences than whites through the federal system for the same crimes.” I do not think that is right at all. And again that is what is wrong with our world today. There are always so many problems with racism and everyone acts like they are trying to stop it but it all just keeps going on and on and no one seems to be wanting to fix anything therefore I feel that if someone would just maybe start changing somethings and changing the way they do things and the way they treat certain people than I truly feel like this world would be such a happier, warmer and sweeter place. I really do look forward to looking and living in the future where hopefully we get to see a stop and end to this awful habit that others have and finally start to see a change in others attitudes and how others act towards each other and their actions towards each other because I truly feel that if someone were to start to stop their ugly habits that other would then look and that and then start to stop theirs are well and then it would all just go and flow together.

I remember; I can’t recall if it was my 7th or 8th grade year of school in Jr. High School, I remember being told that it was time to be shown the way it used to be in the older days and the way slaves and African-Americans used to be treated. So my class was very scared because we had always heard nothing about bad things about this movie and how sad it was and how many people would feel so bad and cry about this movie. So then came the day where we were finally going to start watching the movie. I can’t remember what it was called but I remember exactly what the boys name Kunta Kinte. He was the main character and was kind of like a slave. He was always being tossed around, always be told what to do and when to do it, he was always trying to do his best and when he thought he had finally reached the goal and the best he could do, others would always bring him down and somehow find a way to do whatever he did ten times better. I could not believe some of the scenes that were in the movie. It was just amazingly disgusting to see all of the different things that they used to make these poor African-American “slaves” do. It was so harsh and unhealthy. So mean and cruel. To this day, we get to look back on that and say how much we have improved and how much better we have gotten from that day but really you still look at these days now and you see the same racial discrimination going on on the streets in our own hometown city every single day. I just wonder to myself when all of this will stop, when will this all go away, when will people finally start to realize that everyone was born human. No one is the same and no one is perfect but it is what it is and hopefully one day people will look at themselves and finally say, “Well I am okay with the way I look,” or “I am okay with having dark or blonde hair.” I really feel that it is just a matter of time and that we are finally coming close to it. I know that somewhere in the near future we will finally be able to walk around and not have to hear racial slurs and racial remarks being said everywhere we go and everywhere we walk. That day is coming and we all know it is just a matter of time now. I am very happy to say that I surround myself with people from many races. I do not have all white friends, I do not have all mexican friends, I do not have all African- American friends and I am 110 percent okay with the fact that everyone of my friends are not the same and maybe we are not all happy and we are not all very wealthy but I am proud to say that I am not a big racial discriminator and that I am okay with everyone and I am always welcome to meeting new people and I am always there to help everyone and anyone. I hope to see more people trying to change the acts the everyone in this country and beyond has developed and change them around to what it really should be like.

The last fact that caught my attention was, “ Studies show that police are much more likely to pull over and frisk blacks or Latinos than whites. In New York City, 80 percent of the tops made by the NYPD were blacks and Latinos, and 85 percent of those people were frisked, compared to a mere 8 percent of the white people stopped.” I think it is ridiculous to see how crazy the racial discrimination has gotten through the years and I can not wait until there is someone out there who starts to take charge and really finally try to put a stop to this and succeeds.

Racial Profiling Lives On

I just think it is amazing how crazy this relates to our everyday life. You can walk around anywhere anytime of day around any type of people and you always hear the awful racial discrimination that goes on around in this world. I can see exactly what this author means and I don't think there is going to really ever be a way to stop the racial discrimination that goes on in this world which is very sad to say but most defiantly true.

Seven Times

I really took to heart what Erika was saying throughout this whole essay that she wrote because it was very meaningful and I could completely tell that this came from her heart. I do not think it is at all right that this little boy was shot seven times by the gun that they used. I have a family who is all involved and working within Law Enforcement and they even agreed that that was not okay in any way and they knew he was dead after the third shot.

Literature Analysis #3

1.) A- My book is about a 13 year-old girl who is named Bethany Hamilton. Bethany is a champion surfer who has loved the water since she was a young girl. After an amazing night out surfing and what she thought would be a fun day in the water the next day, she is attacked by a shark and loses her arm. She is rushed to the ER and staying calm, remains her faith in god. They tell her they will be no way for her arm to be kept on and that the shark took it all. She now has to learn how  to surf with one hand and one arm. It will take her friends, family, and her Christian faith to get her back into the water, but if that is where she is meant to be, she will find a way to get through recovery and get back in the water. B- All in all this is about a young girl who never loses her dream, keeps reaching for the stars and never gives up.

2.) I feel that the author chose to write about this story and topic because this could be very influential to many other young girls not only young girls but anyone in this world.

3.)I chose to write about this book because I really do enjoy this book a lot and I think it teaches you something every young human should know, which is to never give up on yourself and always keep reaching for the stars.

4.) Yes, I know this book was realistic because this did happen in real life and if you think about it this could happen to anyone in almost any circumstance not only just in the ocean with a shark and a young 13 year-old girl.

PEOPLE

1.) She chose to write about this book because like I said, this could influence others a lot and really could  change someones life.

2.) Cheri Hamilton- This is the mom of Bethany and I really feel that she is an important character because this is the lady that kept Beth going. I felt like she was always pushing Bethany to her outer limits and she knew what she was capable of.
Tom Hamilton- This is the dad of Bethany and he does play a huge part in this book because a lot like me, Bethany and her dad are very close and Beth looks up to her dad very much so when her dad stayed by her side and helped her with everything that he possibly could, it really meant a lot to her a helped keep her going.

3.) These two people just have a very interested and sweet personality which makes them much easier to talk and to write about.

STYLE

1.) No, I do not see that anywhere in this book that the author uses any type of foreshadowing or shows or demonstrates any type of fiction writing.

2.) The author focuses more on action because she knows that that is the most important part in this book. No one would have really felt the emotion if it wasn’t showed.
3.) I think the author had a  very loving and sweet attitude towards these characters and most of all Bethany because of all that had happened to her and I feel that she really gives her a lot of credit throughout the story because she is so competitive and does not take no for an answer.

4.) She shows more of actions and explains why Bethany and the other characters are doing what they are doing and what it really takes to become successful again for Bethany.

5.) The other did not refer anything as in interview or historical document which makes this very hard to tell from this.

Value Of Learning/Value Of Life

I really feel that the group we have put together ourselves consisting Summer Morgan, Paige Logan, Tiana McMann, and Alyssa Barajas will be very hard working and learn a lot through this time we are given to do this in class. Our plan is to get one section and one assignment done every day so all in all we will be able to complete three different assessments in the matter of three days while you are gone. We are going to focus on also helping not just ourselves but others as well who maybe have questions and we are hoping if we have any questions we will be able to get input from others in the class as well.

Melancholy Grad

To my graduating class of 2014,
I sure have a lot to say about these past few years... Where we have been, what we have been through, the reasons for some of our actions, the struggles over the past years and always the most important; what it takes to overcome the struggles. Now, I am sure all of us have different answers for these different questions but all in all I think they are around the same subject.

In the past, we have all had those days where we wake up at 6:30-7:00 am to wind blowing, rain hitting the windows and the news channel in your parents room saying, "Well folks, it looks like its going to be a rainy day out there today." Yeah, I think I can speak for everyone in this situation. Those are the types of days where you just really do not want to get out of bed and you just want to watch movies, blankets on, hot chocolate in your right hand. But not all of us would choose to do that. Some of students had no problem getting up at that time no matter what kind of day it is they are ready to work and to learn.

As we look back, I am sure we all have had a time or times where we wish we could go back and change the way things went or how the result came out. There will also be the times where we look back and say, "My goodness, that was a blast," like we could remember that date and the time like the back of our hands. All of us I can speak for everyone I am sure have had our good and bad days both. The biggest thing is to have more positive than negative in life and if that is the case then you know you are doing okay.

All in all, each and everyone of you have made an impression and a last thought in this school and I want to thank everyone for such an amazing four years at this amazing school. Even the times when we were trying to go against something or the times we would try to change the rules; we all stuck together as one and I couldn't thank each and everyone of you ladies and gentlemen enough! Class of 2014, you will never be forgotten!

To Be Or Not To Be

A.)
To act or just to stay back and watch.
Should I just sit back and watch and let this happen or should I step forward and do what I really feel should be done and what he deserves to be done to him.
No more heart aches for those that had to be involved in the death of his father and now have to witness the marriage of the uncle to the mother.
Should we really dread something after death, should I kill my uncle and get in trouble but keep him from the throne or should I let him go and do this.
(Had a hard time understanding the ending of this)
B.) I believe in to act on what you know to be true in order to hold yourself in higher esteem because I really do believe that a person should be able to speak their mind no matter what anyone says or does. Everyone needs to know that they have the freedom of speech and they need to understand how and when to put it into play.
C.) The path I will take in life it to speak my mind no matter what time it is, if it is wrong or right and to always let people know what is right and what is wrong because I believe that is how people solve problems and even though someone may not appriciate it at the time, they will look back years later and realize how much you helped them out.

Dear Steve,

This was an amazing article and I really enjoyed reading this. The part that really caught my eye was when you first started this section out with the fact that you were going to tell us three stories, and it was not the fact that you just said three stories; it was because you ended up saying just three stories, thats all. I feel like you meant it was no big deal at all even though the three stories you told all had an amazing and different meaning to each one of them. It seems to me that you are one amazing and very fortunate person who had to work for your future, it was not just handed to you and to me that is one of  the most meaningful things. All in all, thank you for sharing this and I really enjoyed it.

To Act Or To Not Act

This whole section really does not make a lot of sense to me only because I could not really point out where the soliloquy starts and what is the whole meaning of it/the section. I think we need to analyze this a little more and really sit down and talk about it.

The Value Of Choice

A.) The biggest topic that really caught my attention was the topic called, "Roger Ebert: The Essential Man." I feel that I would love to learn more about this section and just really get deep into the text and analyze the different concepts, text, and different ways to learn this topic.

B.) The skills that I would love to learn and acquire by the end of this topical study would have to be the different text styles. Also, another thing that interested me in this whole value to life document was the name of the topic I chose because it just seems like you never really know the Essential Man until you really understand and learn about the topic. So therefore, I feel like this document was made to give you a better understanding and a better view on the actual or what they say is more of the Essential Man.

Netvibes Dashboard

I think this is an amazing website. I love how much you can see at once and creating the whole account only took about 5 minutes if that. This will help me be able to manage many different social networks and emails at many different times. I can be seeing what is happening on twitter while I am also seeing the news feed on Facebook and still waiting for an email from someone on my gmail account. I really feel this could help with a lot and I am looking forward into creating much more onto my dashboard and really figuring this website out. This is really a great idea and I would strongly recommend this website to other high school, college, or graduated students. Even parents could benefit from this, that is what I like most about it.

Life After High School

WHICH COLLEGE IS BEST..?

  • Your choice of college really depends of your interests, goals, and what you really want to do for the rest of your career.
  • There is also many different college sizes and styles. This is a hard thing for most students only because they aren't really sure which college would fit them best.

WHAT, NO MONEY..?

  • Financial Aid is always an amazing option that many of us young adults have going into a college with no money.
  • Along with that comes scholarships, loans, grants, and prepaid tuition programs that offer to help as much as possible but you do have to do some work.

MOST 10 COMMON EXCUSES FOR NOT GOING TO COLLEGE..

  • "Nobody in my family has ever gone to college before."
  • "My grades are not good enough for college."
  • "I can't afford it."
  • "I don't know how to apply for colleges."
  • "I think college may be too difficult for me."
  • "I'm not sure I will FIT IN in college."
  • "I don't even know what I want to major in or what I want to do with my life."
  • "There is no way I can go to college full-time."
  • "I am too old to go to college."
  • "I just want to get a good job and make a good amount of money."

No Child Left Untableted

This article really did interest me because I think this is an awesome oppurtunity for the teacher to make teaching a little more fun and interesting for the students. Along with that comes the students really enjoying the course by learning in different ways and being able to do hands on kinds of activities as well.

Declaration Of Independence

I, Lauren Reynoso, will do my best to finish every assignment on time and to do all of my work to the best of my ability. I will try my best to get an A in this class because I know I can and my parents hold me accountable to it. I will always show respect to my fellow classmates and be there to help when they are in need. This is how I will achieve my goal of getting an A in this course.

Freedom Of Choice

The pro's and con's of being able to make your own decisions is that sometimes people can judge. So say you think you are making what feels like to you the right decision, others may think to themselves oh this isn't a good decision or this decision is not the right one. But on the other side of things, there will always be the people that agree with the decision you are making because they know it will help you in the long run. I really feel that people need to be careful of the decisions they make because it could always influence others around you and if it's bad you never want people to think bad about you. I like making choices by myself because of the way I have been raised. I have been raised by two amazing parents who would bump me if I ever got off the path to success. I thank that for them everyday but along with that now I know what is wrong and what is right so when I make a decision I think before I act.

Lit. Analysis #1

TOPIC(S) AND/OR EVENT(S)

1.) A-  There is a young boy named Roy Eberhardt who moves to Coconut Cove, Flordia and takes on a task that no one had ever pictured him doing. He is helping to save the burrowing owls by stopping the construction that had currently been planned on the piece of land where these owls were living. He doesn’t just take this task on by himself though. He asks his friends to help him out and by doing all that he does during this time, he becomes a very mature young man.
B- One clear statement that I think can describe this story in is that there is a young man who wants to clearly save these burrowing owls and so he takes a jump in his life, invites his friends and at the end, it most definatly pays off.

2.) I feel that this author chose to write about this certian topic and story because it was their project that influence other young indivisuals to help out the wildlife and community and take control.

3.) I chose to read this book because it caught my attention when I read the summary on the back and saw that this young man was interested in saving his wildlife animal that he really liked. Not everyone has the heart and push to save an animal as he did.

4.) Yes, I found this book very realistic only because I could relate this to the everyday world and also to my everyday life. You have the people in your life that could careless about anything or anyone besides themselves and I think there is one out of twenty people these days that may have done that. This world always needs to have those caring people in it.

PEOPLE:

1.) I think that this author chose these types of charateristcs because if you think about it there always has to be those caring and animal loving type of people.

2.) Roy Eberhardt: He is around twelve years old and he is also the main character of this story. He moved to Flordia from Montana as he was the “new kid.” He is the charater that shows growing up and maturing by the actions that he takes. Beatrice Leep is another one of the major characters who is the step sister of Mullet Fingers. She goes to Trace Middleschool and is the tall and strong girl at the school. She plays soccer and she is always the one protecting her step brother Mullet. Mullet Fingers is about the same age as Roy. Mullet is sa nickname for Napoleon Bridger, a younh man who has been rejected by his own mother, has no friends other than Beatrice, and she happens to be the first one to stand up to protect the Burrow Owls.

3.) All of these major characters are interesting to write about because they are three different personalities. They go from sweet to sour, from nice to mean and they are just all three interesting people.

STYLE:

1.) The author used more of the foreshadowing point of view.
2.) The author focuses more on description and describing the people and places and actions that the characters are taking and/or doing.

3.) Carl uses the description and dialouge to show and create the mood of this great nonfiction story.

4.) I think the author was more towards the whole saving of the Burrowing Owls or she wouldn’t have written about this topic. It easily could have been any animal being saved.

5.) The author did not use any resources in this book.

ENDURING MEMORY:

I feel that I will remember the love and compassion that all three characters that I described had towards and for these Burrowing Owls. I really love the fact that they took the time and exceptions it took to create this saving of the Owls. You really do have to have a certain personality for this and I feel that all three of the major character; Beatrice, Roy, and Mullet; had this certain mindset.

An Apple A Day Synopsis

An apple a day was pretty much said to be that it was the health care unit that is really looking into this and knows that if you are eating a apple a day, it should help with your health! Although sometimes people meaning younger teens always say oh no apples are going to do much for us; they really do and I think it is amazing that the health nutrionets have been able give and show some actual point where it tells/shows that it really does help. All in all this article should be watch by many young adults to show and explain how much important it really is to have a healthy eating style.

Vocab #1 Fall

In expository reading and writing, I have learned a lot already. I find that using a composition book to keep all of my assignments together is very helpful in this coarse. I really feel that Dr. Preston is going to assuage this class so that we have a easier time with it. There will be a time where decadence will come into play as well I am sure. There are many topics or books that will be hackneyed only because we have seen or read them already. I know for a fact there will be a time again where we come together for a Socratic Seminar and a coalition will be formed. I am going to push myself and transcend through out this semester because I know I can do it! Some people deserve this and end up being very meritorious. There will be days where many of us have that lurid feeling and aren't too sure of a book or maybe a new topic but I know we will get though it. There will be no time for petulant people in the class because we all want to learn and we all need to understand.

REFLECTIONS ON WEEK 1

REFLECTIONS

1.) No, there are no factors that are going to limit my participation or expierence in this class this year.

2.) The best learning expierence was an actual hands on lab for a marine class I was in. We traveled to the Avila Marine Center and were having to disect a Squid. My dad actually came along on the trip with me to help out and I was also accompanied by my fellow class mates at the time. This certian expierence taught me that I do learn better when I actually have hands on types of labs not just the reading the paper and answering questions lab. I now know from that that I do much better when I have the chance to do something and see it; not a reading and book reader learner.

3.) I am looking forward to learning how to actually read and understand a book without any problems. I feel that if I have a problem in knowing how to do something or having a misunderstanding in a certian topic or any topic; I know I can go to you and talk to you about whatever my questions may be. I think it will make a difference in my life only because it is teaching me that  I can do something when I have a great teacher teaching me, guideing me and helping me throughout the period I am trying to accomplish the task.

My Big Question

I have always wanted to know as a young teenager, what the world is going to be like when I am 50+. I can only begin to imagine the technology and different types of inventions for years to come. If I could invent one type of invetion it would have to be being able to look forward in time to see what is ahead of you and if you aren't liking the way it looks, being able to change right then and there. It would be amazing!

It's All Latin To Me

"He who begins is half done. Dare to be wise. Make a beginning."

This translation is a way of saying that starting something is only half of the battle, finishing it is a whole other project. The second half of this quote means don't be afraid to take a chance, start something new and don't settle for the same things that all of your fellow friends do.
